Nostalgia or Now__edited_edited.jpg

Queer artist Hayley White has created humorous, political and sexual collages from 1960's and contemporary Ladybird Books. Littered with (now) problematic medical advice, on parenting disabled children called ‘None can be called deformed; Problems of the Crippled Adolescent’ by V. Mallison in 1956. Evoking a playful and often painful sense of nostalgia from a bygone era. Raising political issues that are still relevant today.

Collectively the work seeks to ‘queer’ our understanding of our history. The narratives told to our children, the problems of the past and the challenges of perpetuating patriarchal nostalgia. Asking how different is this history from today (now)?

Works include; ‘How much is that pussy…?’, ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘Prosecution’, ‘Cat that got the cream’, ‘On the way out’, ‘Shafted’ , ‘Shared Interests’
